Tour Details

This Mongolia off-road 4×4 tour is a guided self-drive convoy across Northern and Central Mongolia, with a lead car, mechanical backup, and full support. You’ll reach Khuvsgul Lake, ride to visit the Tsaatan reindeer herders, and explore volcanic landscapes—while driving your own vehicle with expert guidance.

This is not a paved-road sightseeing trip — it’s a rugged expedition through muddy trails, steep mountain passes, dense forests, and river crossings where no bridges exist.

Your journey begins with a visit to the majestic Amarbayasgalant Monastery, then continues through the vast protected landscapes of Bulgan Province, onward to Khuvsgul Lake, known as Mongolia’s “Blue Pearl.”

In the remote region of Tsagaan Nuur, deep in the mountains, you’ll leave the vehicles behind to ride horse or reindeer to reach the Tsaatan reindeer herder nomads. Share a traditional lunch with a host family and gain rare insight into their ancient, spiritual lifestyle.

As the convoy heads south, traverse the volcanic beauty of Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, the green hills of Arkhangai Province, the spiritual center of Khar Khorin and Erdene Zuu Monastery, and finally the rolling sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai in Uvurkhangai Province.

Each evening, unwind at scenic Ger camps and experience authentic Mongolian cuisine and warm nomadic hospitality.

Itinerary

Day 1Ulaanbaatar → Amarbayasgalant Monastery → Erdenet City (295 miles / 475 km)

Our 9-day 4×4 self-drive adventure begins with an early hotel pickup in Ulaanbaatar. After a safety briefing and vehicle orientation, we hit the road and head north toward one of Mongolia’s most revered spiritual sites — Amarbayasgalant Monastery.

The scenic 6-hour drive (approx. 361 km) takes you through rolling hills and open steppe. Upon arrival, you’ll explore the serene monastery complex nestled in a remote river valley — a peaceful introduction to Mongolia’s rich Buddhist heritage.

After exploring the monastery, we continue driving another 2.5 hours (approx. 114 km) to Erdenet City, where we’ll settle in for the night at a local hotel or Ger camp.

Meals: Lunch/Dinner.

Day 2Erdenet → Khutag-Undur → Eg Tarvagatai Belchir → Khutag-Undur (280 miles / 450 km)

After breakfast, head west to Khutag-Undur in Bulgan Province (4 hrs / 224km) for lunch. Then continue on a rugged 3-hour off-road trail (120km one way) to the remote wilderness of Eg Tarvagatai Belchir. Enjoy a traditional Mongolian BBQ (Khorkhog) at a resort in Teshig Soum. Return to Khutag-Undur (3 hrs / 120km) for the night.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 3Khutag-Undur → Khuvsgul Lake (220 miles / 350 km)

Drive approximately 5 hours (350km) to reach the stunning Khuvsgul Lake, the “Blue Pearl of Mongolia.” Spend a relaxing evening at the lakeside resort. Relax and enjoy breathtaking views.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 4Khuvsgul Lake – Tsagaan Nuur Province (224 miles/360 km)

This full-day extreme off-road drive (8 hrs / 360km) plunges you into the heart of the Darhad Valley—one of Mongolia’s wildest, most remote frontiers. Navigate muddy forest trails, deep river crossings, and untamed terrain as you make your way to Tsagaan Nuur Soum, the gateway to the mystical world of the Tsaatan reindeer herders. Tonight, you’ll stay in a traditional Ger camp under a sky full of stars, far from civilization.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 5Tsaatan Reindeer Herders

Ride a reindeer or horse (approximately 2 hours one way) into the remote mountain taiga, guided by a Tsaatan reindeer herder who personally leads the way to their home. Since the animals belong to the herder and naturally follow each other, the ride is smooth and surprisingly calm—even for first-time riders.

Upon arrival, spend the day with a Tsaatan family, learning about their unique reindeer-herding lifestyle and enjoying a traditional lunch in their teepee-style dwelling.

Return to the ger camp in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 6Tsagaan Nuur Soum→ Murun City (200 miles / 320 km)

After bidding farewell to the Tsaatan herders, begin your return to civilization with a demanding 7-hour off-road journey (320km) through thick taiga forests, muddy mountain passes, and wild river valleys. This leg of the adventure is as raw and remote as it gets—expect pure overlanding. By evening, arrive in Murun city, the provincial capital, where a hot shower and cozy hotel bed await.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 7Murun City → Tariat Soum Central Mongolia (210 miles / 340 km)

After breakfast in Murun (Khuvsgul Province), gear up for another full day of thrilling travel—approx. 8 hours (210miles/340km)—as we journey into the heart of Arkhangai Province. The landscape transforms dramatically as we descend from the northern taiga into the volcanic highlands.

We’ll arrive at Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (Great White Lake), a breathtaking freshwater lake surrounded by ancient lava fields, rolling grasslands, and the dormant Khorgo Volcano, which you can hike for panoramic views. On the way, we’ll pass through the Chuluut River Valley, famous for its dramatic basalt cliffs carved by the river, creating one of the most scenic canyons in Central Mongolia.

This region is a paradise for nature lovers—rich in wildlife, volcanic rock formations, and untouched natural beauty.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 8Tariat (Khorgo) → Kharkhorin (180 miles / 280 km)

Explore the volcanic region in the morning. Then drive 4 hours (280km) to the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire—Kharkhorin. In the evening, enjoy a hearty dinner at a local restaurant and settle into a cozy Ger camp under the stars.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 9Kharkhorin → Elsen Tasarhai Sand Dunes → Ulaanbaatar (224 miles / 360 km)

After breakfast, we’ll visit the legendary Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery built in 1586 using stones from the ruins of ancient Karakorum, the once-glorious capital of Genghis Khan’s empire. Wander through its serene courtyards and admire centuries-old Buddhist artifacts and temple architecture.

We’ll then head east to the Elsen Tasarhai Sand Dunes, a unique natural phenomenon where Gobi-like dunes blend into grassy steppe and forested hills. Stretch your legs with a short walk on the golden sands—an unexpected taste of the desert in the heart of Central Mongolia.

From here, we’ll continue our 5-hour drive back to Ulaanbaatar, crossing ever-changing landscapes that remind you of the epic journey you’ve just completed—from deep forests and hidden valleys to remote reindeer camps and volcanic lakes.

This final leg wraps up your unforgettable off-road expedition across Mongolia, filled with raw beauty, ancient culture, and wild adventure.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

We joined this tour as a couple along with my boyfriend’s buddies (Ethan and the crew), and it turned out to be the perfect mix of adventure and comfort. I’ll admit I was nervous about the off-road parts at first, but the guide’s briefing and the lead car made it feel exciting instead of scary. The river crossings were such a rush, Khuvsgul Lake was unbelievably clear, and our evenings in gers were cozy and quiet—just us, friends, and a sky full of stars. My boyfriend and his friends loved every muddy, bumpy mile, and I honestly enjoyed it just as much. Challenge by day, hot tea by night—it doesn’t get better.

We were five buddies and drove to Khuvsgul (northern Mongolia) in two well-equipped cars provided by Nomad Trail—and wow, the route exceeded our expectations. Long stretches off the track, plenty of muddy, rocky, challenging sections, and proper wilderness driving. We even got stuck in deep mud while pushing through deep woods on the way to the Tsaatan community, but our lead car driver Dava jumped in, coached us over the radio, and had us winched out and back on track quickly. Special thanks to Dava and our guide BJ—both professional and genuinely fun to be around. This is the real off-road adventure we were hoping for.

Four friends, 3 cars, endless laughs. The team kept things simple—clear routes, radio check-ins, and quick help when we needed it. Day 4 into Tsagaan Nuur was pure adventure, and meeting a Tsaatan family was a real “pinch me” moment. We hiked a volcano, rolled through canyons, and somehow still had energy for campfire stories. It’s big-day driving, but super rewarding. Bring a playlist and a sense of humor.
