The round-trip hike takes approximately two hours, with an option to climb to the summit for panoramic views. For those seeking an extra adventure, a camel riding and sand dune sledding activities are available. Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Journey to the legendary Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag), renowned for being the site of Mongolia’s first major paleontological discoveries. Explore this historic location, retracing the footsteps of Roy Chapman Andrews (1884–1960), the famed American explorer, adventurer, and naturalist. Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Spend the day traveling towards the banks of the Ongii River, a 4-5 hour journey that includes traversing rugged trails across vast dry plains with no direct roads. Upon arrival, check into your Ger camp near the river and explore the ruins of two historic monasteries—Barlim Khiid in the north and Khutagt Khiid in the south. Together, they form the Ongiin Khiid Monastery complex, a site of great cultural and historical significance. Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
After breakfast, we’ll begin our journey from the Middle Gobi to Central Mongolia — a scenic drive of approximately 6 hours. Along the way, enjoy lunch while witnessing the dramatic transformation of the landscape, from arid desert plains to lush green valleys. Upon arrival in Karakorum, the historic capital in Uvurkhangai Province, we’ll settle in for a delicious dinner and a relaxing evening — the perfect way to rejuvenate before the adventures ahead in Central Mongolia. Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
After breakfast, travel to Karakorum, the former capital of the 13th-century Great Mongol Empire. Explore Erdene-Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first and largest monastery, built on the ruins of the ancient capital. Tour its historic temples, which house remarkable Buddhist Thangka paintings and statues from the 17th century. Visit the Karakorum Museum to gain deeper insight into the city’s rich history.
After lunch, we’ll head toward the remote and sacred Tuvkhun Monastery, nestled high in the forested mountains on the border of Övörkhangai and Arkhangai provinces. Founded in the 17th century by Zanabazar, Mongolia’s first spiritual leader, this monastery is a tranquil retreat known for its meditative setting and stunning panoramic views. You can choose to ride a horse up the forested hill or enjoy a scenic hike to reach the site.
For those interested, an optional visit to a local nomadic family is available — where you’ll witness the traditional preparation of Mongolian barbecue (khorkhog) and enjoy it fresh off the fire.
After exploring Tuvkhun Monastery, we’ll continue our journey to the rejuvenating Tsenkher Natural Hot Springs in Arkhangai Province. Enjoy a peaceful overnight stay. Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
After breakfast, we’ll drive to the Khorgo Volcano, a dormant volcanic crater located in the heart of Arkhangai Province. Once we arrive, we’ll explore the stunning landscapes surrounding the Terkh White Lake — a serene freshwater lake formed by ancient volcanic activity, ideal for photos, short walks, and peaceful reflection.
We’ll also visit the dramatic Chuluut River Valley, where the river winds through a deep basalt canyon carved over thousands of years by volcanic eruptions and erosion — a breathtaking example of Mongolia’s geological diversity.
Tonight, we’ll spend the final and most beautiful night of our journey surrounded by the natural wonders of Arkhangai Province — a perfect ending before returning to the city the next day. Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
After breakfast, we’ll drive to Elsen Tasarkhai, a picturesque semi-desert region often referred to as the “mini Gobi.” This unique landscape features rolling sand dunes, grasslands, and rocky hills — a rare natural combination that beautifully showcases Mongolia’s ecological diversity. It’s a great spot for photos and a peaceful final stop before returning to the city.
From there, we’ll drive directly back to Ulaanbaatar. Our journey concludes with a drop-off at your hotel or preferred location in the city. For those who opted for airport transfer service, we will arrange transportation to the airport on your scheduled departure date.
Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
We traveled as a family and had an outstanding experience. The guide paced the days so our kids never felt rushed, with plenty of photo stops and stretch breaks. The comfortable 4×4 had room for all our bags, and the team handled every logistic—airport pickup, camp check-ins, and dietary needs—so we could just soak it all in. Sunrise on the dunes was magical, the Flaming Cliffs at golden hour were a hit with everyone, and the hot springs made for a relaxing end to a big day.
This was the perfect Mongolia intro. The pacing balanced big landscapes (Yol Valley, Khongoryn Els dunes, Bayanzag) with culture (Erdene Zuu and Karakorum). Ger camps were cozy, food was hearty, and our guide kept long drives fun with great stories. Pack layers—the wind can surprise you even in summer. I’d book it again in a heartbeat.
