Itinerary

Day 1Ulaanbaatar → Erdenet City → Khutag-Undur Soum, Bulgan Province (361 miles / 581 km)

Our 7-day adventure begins with an early hotel pickup in Ulaanbaatar. After a trip briefing, we head north on a scenic drive through rolling hills and open steppe, stopping in Erdenet City, one of Mongolia’s largest cities, built during the Soviet era and home to the country’s biggest copper mine. Continue to Khutag-Undur (Bulgan Province), a peaceful province known for its lush valleys, crystal-clear rivers, and fertile pastures dotted with nomadic herder camps. Spend the night here, enjoying the fresh countryside air and the warm hospitality of rural Mongolia.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner.

Day 2Khutag-Undur Soum → Khuvsgul Lake (217 miles / 350 km)

After breakfast, we will drive to Khuvsgul Lake, often called the “Blue Pearl of Mongolia” for its crystal-clear waters and stunning alpine scenery. Surrounded by forested mountains and home to diverse wildlife, it is one of the largest and deepest freshwater lakes in Asia.  Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at the camp, followed by a walk along the lakeshore to take in the breathtaking scenery. Dinner and an overnight stay will be at a ger camp by the lake.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Day 3Khuvsgul lake → Tsagaan Nuur Soum (224 miles / 360 km)

Start the day with breakfast at the ger camp before setting out to full-day extreme off-trip (8 hrs / 360km) plunges you into the heart of the Darhad Valley—one of Mongolia’s wildest, most remote frontiers. Navigate muddy forest trails, deep river crossings, and untamed terrain as you make your way to Tsagaan Nuur Soum, the gateway to the mystical world of the Tsaatan reindeer herders. Tonight, you’ll stay in a traditional Ger camp under a sky full of stars, far from civilization.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Day 4Tsagaan Nuur Soum → Tsaatan Reindeer Herders

After breakfast, ride a reindeer or horse (approximately 2 hours one way) into the remote mountain taiga, guided by a Tsaatan reindeer herder who personally leads the way to their home. Since the animals belong to the herder and naturally follow each other, the ride is smooth and surprisingly calm—even for first-time riders.

Upon arrival, spend the day with a Tsaatan family, learning about their unique reindeer-herding lifestyle and enjoying a traditional lunch and dinner in their teepee-style dwelling. Spend the night in their traditional teepee-style tent, sharing stories and experiencing their unique nomadic lifestyle in the heart of the taiga.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Day 5Tsaatan Reindeer Herders

Today, you’ll have the unique opportunity to discover the Tsaatan people’s morning routine and even prepare breakfast alongside them. The Dukha, also known as reindeer herders, have preserved their distinct culture for centuries, living in harmony with their reindeer and the surrounding taiga forest. Around noon, we’ll set out on horseback or reindeer to reach the next camp, where we’ll enjoy dinner and spend the night in a traditional Ger camp.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Day 6Tsaatan Reineer Herders → Murun Soum (200 miles / 320 km)

After bidding farewell to the Tsaatan herders, begin your return to civilization with a demanding 7-hour off-road journey (320km) through thick taiga forests, muddy mountain passes, and wild river valleys. This leg of the adventure is as raw and remote as it gets—expect pure overlanding. By evening, arrive in Murun city, the provincial capital, where a hot shower and cozy hotel bed await.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.

Day 7Murun Soum → Ulaanbaatar (481 miles / 775 km)

After fulfilling breakfast in Murun, we’ll drive back to Ulaanbaatar, crossing ever-changing landscapes that remind you of the epic journey you’ve just completed—from deep forests and hidden valleys to remote reindeer camps and volcanic lakes. Along the way, we’ll stop for a proper lunch at a comfortable restaurant offering a variety of dishes, including both Mongolian specialties and international options, so you can enjoy a meal that suits your taste before the final stretch.

This final leg wraps up your unforgettable off-road expedition across Mongolia, filled with raw beauty, ancient culture, and wild adventure.

Meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner.
