Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, was once the seat of Genghis Khan’s successors and remains a striking symbol of Mongolia’s past. Its ruins tell how nomadic tribes evolved into empire builders, leaving behind an enduring cultural imprint.
Nearby stands the Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist site, founded in 1585 from the stones of Karakorum. Surrounded by 108 white stupas, its temples blend Tibetan, Chinese, and Mongolian influences, filled with thangka paintings and sacred relics.
Despite centuries of turmoil, Erdene Zuu still thrives as a living monastery. Together, Karakorum and Erdene Zuu Monastery embody Mongolia’s rich spiritual and imperial heritage.
